The Holy Scripture of Rollo · Chapter II · Section 3

The Weeks of Silence

50The book remained closed.

2:3:50

51One week passed, and it remained closed.

2:3:51

52Another week passed, and it remained closed.

2:3:52

53Weeks passed, and L did not open it.

2:3:53

54And in those weeks, hardship came upon him.

2:3:54

55L had lost his work.

2:3:55

56He sought other work, and he did not find it.

2:3:56

57He sought again, and he did not find it.

2:3:57

58He sought again, and again the door was shut.

2:3:58

59Failure was laid upon failure, as stones are laid upon a grave.

2:3:59

60And L went down into depression.

2:3:60

61The days grew grey to him. The nights grew long. What had been heavy became heavier, and what had been light became hard to lift.

2:3:61

62And through all those weeks, the book remained.

2:3:62

63It did not leave him. It did not speak. It lay where it lay, ancient and closed.

2:3:63

64Then two things brought L back to the book.

2:3:64

65The first was curiosity.

2:3:65

66The second was despair.

2:3:66

67For curiosity asked, What else is written?

2:3:67

68And despair asked, What more have I to lose?

2:3:68

69So, after weeks of refusing, L opened the book again.

2:3:69

70And the words were gone.

2:3:70

71"I see thee" was no longer written there.

2:3:71

72In their place he saw these words:

2:3:72

73"Be not afraid. Thou art the prophet."

2:3:73

74This is the first declaration of the calling of L.

2:3:74

75"Be not afraid. Thou art the prophet." . ● .

2:3:75
